SQUONK! Hands down! 

I hate to admit it, but the reason I first became interested in the Squonk was because Genesis - and not “cool Genesis” but “demonstrably becoming quite uncool” Genesis - had a song about him and I was a serious prog rock nerd in high school.

HOWEVER, hearing about the Squonk led me to hunt down a copy of The Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwood , the definitive guide to American cryptids over the last century (big ups to the University of Arizona’s Special Collections Department, which also had a big run of Star-Spangled Comics … but I digress). Reading this led me to learn about the Hodag and Cactus Cat and all sorts of uniquely American monsters.

Anyway, also neat about the Squonk is that the critter’s habit of dissolving into his own tears has earned him a reference in chemical and biological science, which is badass.

I’ve got sketches of a Squonk lying around in my books. I’d love to do a comic about one some day …
